Hello all,

Hope this hasn't been covered before here, but it looks like Bob Tisdale, Anthony Watts's former go-to science guy, has gone AWOL. Let's hope it's not health related, but the way he signed off on his website doesn't suggest so:-

"I’m having too much fun someplace where it’s warm and sunny… I’m not sure when I’ll be back [where my spreadsheets are], if ever."

That's dated Feb 15, 2017! Bob's posted no new monthly global temperature updates since December 2017, which is one blessing. Is it possible that the record temperatures being set around the world at that time, both surface and satellite, effectively broke poor Bob's old 'sceptical' heart?

Did he snap? Does anyone know? Sue??

Thanks,

David

I'm having difficulty quitting Scott Adams. Here is his latest.

He refers to a headline "Climate change computer model vindicated 30 years later...." Then he offers to bet a million bucks that he, Scott Adams, could do that. More specifically, "I can come up with a climate forecast model that ignores C02 and still predicts the temperature 30 years from now ...."

And he isn't going to. Aw shucks! A climate model that ignores
greenhouse gasses would be a scientific miracle. A revolution in
physics. Such revolutions have happened. Let's hear him out.

Scott Adams adds he is 100% confident he can do it, "using my current skill set." So that revolution in physics is in the bag already. Probably it is already in Scott Adams' head! And
we have testimony that Scott Adams has quite a smart head. Very persuasive testimony. From the source itself. So it is likely
true.

But then, as so often happens, @SA continues to write, and utterly
spoils the illusion. He doesn't propose to model anything. He proposes
to pull a bunch of numbers out of his butt and *call* it a model. Repeatedly.
And one of those numbers will turn out 30 years later to be true, so he wins his bet.

Get it? It is just like the old story about the investment-adviser scam. The guy who sends different stock predictions to a bunch of different people, then .... Scott Adams goes on to compliment his readers as being smart enough not to fall for that old scam.

So Adams equates physical modeling with pulling-numbers-out-of-your-butt, and a successful model is a scam. And he congratulates his readers for how smart they are for knowing about such scams.

One problem is that he his a pretty good storyteller.
Another problem is that it has lessened my taste for Dilbert cartoons. One of his best tropes is when a character uses logical-sounding rhetorical trickery to turn something on its head or put down another character. It is funny in a cartoon. it became less funny when I found out that Adams likes to practice these tricks in real life. And even less funny because he does it for the purpose of reinforcing climate denial.

Like I've been saying all along, this ain't no artifact

Boy, would I love to survey those. (The one at Nuuk is abominably placed. Class 4. And a CRS, to boot. The well sited stations do indeed show warming. It is just that they show an awful lot less warming than the poorly sited stations.

So expect a big splash when the research and data are all finished.
A little more than a year ago, David Evans was causing a lot of excitement among "skeptics" with his New Science series (the 2nd attempt at his "solar notch" hypothesis). He was going to revolutionize climate science and prove once and for all that it's the sun!

Now his last few articles have been coming at a pace every couple of months, but now there hasn't been any updates since June with the 25th(!!) article in the series. Remember, he said in the first article that this work had already been submitted for peer review; if that were true, he wouldn't need to be figuring this out on the fly, and merely posting a summary of his already-submitted work.

I'm sure you're all familiar with his series, but is Jo Nova just quietly hoping everybody will forget about it now that David Evans has apparently painted himself into a corner (again?) Obviously, posting an "I was wrong" article won't fly the second time since that's how his first series ended in 2014.

It doesn’t get better than this. Trump is one hundred percent skeptic, no pandering.

Say goodbye to the fantasy that CO2 controls the planets thermostat.

So basically, the new narrative is apparently that Trump has managed to change the laws of physics. That's pretty impressive.
The OLD narrative was that Obama was manipulating NOAA and NASA to fake data and support his radical "green agenda." Well, say goodbye to that!

What's the narrative going to be when the data keeps coming in, under Trump's rule, that still supports global warming? I think at that point the only option is to dismantle NOAA and NASA climate studies completely, basically the equivalent of gouging out our eyeballs so that we are unable to see what's going on.

Doesn't matter: deniers have declared victory! The pigeons have knocked over the chess pieces, shat all over the chess board, and proclaimed that they have won the game.

Luckily for us, the laws of physics are pretty immutable.

Perhaps Sue will cover this on the main blog, but if not, then it's worth mentioning that it's the time of year again when the Deniosaurs celebrate the latest 'recovery' of Arctic sea ice extent. WUWT, aided and abetted by Paul Homewood, is leading the charge with the following tales of the great 2016 rebound:

"- The earliest minimum since 1997 – shows how cold it is there
- This year extent was 22% above 2012, despite two massive storms
- Thickness is way up on 2010 and 2011
- Already extent is above 2007, as well as 2012, for this date
- We are looking at one of the fastest ice growths in September on record"

Every point made here falls into the 'one side of the story' category. They can all be countered with a single "but"...

- 'The earliest minimum extent since 2007' but the second lowest extent on record and well within the normal range of minimum extent dates. Anyway, it's not unusually cold there. Even AW links to the DMI chart showing the Arctic is currently (as of 15 Sept) anomalously warm.

- 'Extent 22% above 2012 despite two massive storms' but summer conditions that were generally unfavourable for ice melt go unmentioned.

- 'Thickness is way up on 2010 and 2011' but way down on 2014 and 2015. According to Neven, "During August 2016 more sea ice volume was lost than during any other August in the past decade."

- 'Already extent is above 2007, as well as 2012, for this date' but it's only been 5 days since minimum extent was reached and in 2007 and 2012 ice extent minimum wasn't even reached until 14 September!

- 'We are looking at one of the fastest ice growths in September on record' but, as was mentioned above it's only been growing for 5 days!! What we're looking at is a five day snapshot.

Ah, the fickle world of the deniosaurs. They can simultaneously deny the validity of scientists extrapolating from a decades long downward trend in sea ice minimum extent values, whilst themselves happily extrapolating from a 5 day 'trend' in sea ice extent that - one that happens to be in the direction they like.

(Hope the images and link were posted correctly.)

Thinking about seepage this morning, it occurred to me I should post this over here to see if it invites any discussion.

Seepage: The effect of climate denial on the scientific community

By Stephan Lewandowsky

Professor, School of Experimental Psychology and Cabot Institute, University of Bristol

Posted on 7 May 2015

The article “Seepage: Climate change denial and its effect on the scientific community” just appeared in Global Environmental Change. The article is authored by me and Naomi Oreskes, James S. Risbey, Ben R. Newell, and Michael Smithson.

It is open access and can be found here.

Seepage: The Executive Summary

We initiate our argument with the known fact that vested interests and political agents have long opposed political or regulatory action in response to climate change by appealing to scientific uncertainty. We know from earlier work that uncertainty is no cause for inaction—on the contrary, greater scientific uncertainty should make us worry more, not less, about the potential consequences of climate change. Alas, those actual scientific implications are often inverted in public discourse where uncertainty often invites wishful thinking and hence inaction. In this new article, we examine the effect of contrarian talking points that arise out of uncertainty on the scientific community itself. We show that although scientists are trained in dealing with uncertainty, there are several psychological and cognitive reasons why scientists may nevertheless be susceptible to uncertainty-based argumentation, even when scientists recognize those arguments as false and are actively rebutting them.

Climate scientists have done an admirable job pursuing their science under great political pressure, and they have tirelessly rebutted pseudoscientific arguments against their work. Nonetheless, being human, scientists’ operate with the same cognitive apparatus and limitations as every other person. In consequence, it is important to be aware of the factors that may cause scientists to take positions that they would be less likely to take in the absence of outspoken public opposition. We refer to this phenomenon as seepage.

We highlight three well-known psychological mechanisms that may facilitate the seepage of contrarian memes into scientific discourse and thinking: ‘stereotype threat’, ‘pluralistic ignorance’ and the ‘third-person effect’.

Stereotype threat refers to the emotional and behavioural responses when a person is reminded of an adverse stereotype against a group to which they belong. Thus, when scientists are stereotyped as ‘alarmists’, a predicted response would be for them to try to avoid seeming alarmist by downplaying the degree of threat. There are now severalstudies that highlight this tendency by scientists to avoid highlighting risks, lest they be seen as ‘alarmist.’

Pluralistic ignorance describes the phenomenon which arises when a minority opinion is given disproportionate prominence in public debate, resulting in the majority of people incorrectly assuming their opinion is marginalized. Thus, a public discourse that asserts that the IPCC has exaggerated the threat of climate change may cause scientists who disagree to think their views are in the minority, and they may therefore feel inhibited from speaking out in public.

Finally, research shows that people generally believe that persuasive communications exert a stronger effect on others than on themselves: this is known as the third-person effect. However, in actual fact, people tend to be more affected by persuasive messages than they think. This suggests the scientific community may be susceptible to arguments against climate change even when they know them to be false.

While those potential drivers of seepage are well-understood outside the context of climate science, it is a different matter to show that they have actually affected the conduct of science. In our article, we illustrate the consequences of seepage from public debate into the scientific process with a case study involving the interpretation of temperature trends from the last 15 years, the so-called ‘pause’ or ‘hiatus’. This is a nuanced issue that can be addressed in multiple different ways. In this article, we focus primarily on the asymmetry of the scientific response to the so-called ‘pause’—which is not a pause but a moderate slow-down in warming that does not qualitatively differ from previous fluctuations in decadal warming rate. Crucially, on previous occasions when decadal warming was particularly rapid, the scientific community did not give short-term climate variability the attention it has recently received, when decadal warming was slower. During earlier rapid warming there was no additional research effort directed at explaining ‘catastrophic’ warming. By contrast, the recent modest decrease in the rate of warming has elicited numerous articles and special issues of leading journals and it has been (mis-)labeled as a ‘pause’ or ‘hiatus’. We suggest that this asymmetry in response to fluctuations in the decadal warming trend likely reflects the ‘seepage’ of contrarian memes into scientific work.

Finally, we offer ways in which the scientific community can detect and avoid such inadvertent seepage.

Seepage: Some FAQs

Walter said he was going to write about why he rejects climate science, but he didn't. Instead he just wrote another long Gish gallop about what science he rejects.

It seems to me, reading between the lines, that he has a bad case of motivated reasoning. He admits he doesn't get his science from scientific papers or scientists, or from mainstream science articles. Instead he got it from a disinformation book from Australia's Institute of Public Affairs (a right wing lobby group).

If you're interested, I've written a blog article about this, and have drawn some conclusions of my own.
I was looking for a video I'd planned to refer in the Delingpole thread when I weird thing happened.
Actually I've had irritating results with YouTube searches before, but this was too blatant and timely.

Does anyone here understand why a YouTube search for Greenman3610 would lead me directly to Heartland Institute Videos.

Malcolm Roberts got his 15 minutes (actually it was more like 30 minutes) trying to persuade Professor Brian Cox that climate change is a hoax dreamt up by bankers who want to take over the world, or something. Even deniers at WUWT didn't think he won the day. Except for Eric Worrall. Many of them judged his performance by how the audience reacted, and they didn't think he persuaded them.

The thing that was different this time was that the media scorned him - all around the world.

Some people thought that Brian Cox could have done better. I'm not in that camp. IMO he pitched it right. My favourite was the look of amazed disbelief on Brian Cox's face when Malcolm Roberts tried to claim that NASA faked the temperature data. "NASA?" he asked, almost choking trying to hold back his laughter. "The same NASA that sent men to the moon?" (And then he asked if Malcolm believed that there really was a manned space journey to the moon.)

I have just read an interesting article regard a new film call "Denial"

no not climate change denial - but a film based on the court case, fought in London's High Courts of Justice between the American historian and academic Deborah Lipstadt and the British historian David Irvine.

David Irvine was notorious for "denying" the Holocaust - Irvine sued Lipstadt when she called him out on his denial

David Irvine

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Irving

The trial

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irving_v_Penguin_Books_Ltd

The article

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/sep/03/david-hare-nothing-but-the-truth-about-a-holocaust-denial

this quote caught my eye

"As Lipstadt says in my screenplay, certain things are true. Elvis is dead. The icecaps are melting. And the Holocaust did happen. Millions of Jews went to their deaths in camps and open pits in a brutal genocide which was sanctioned and operated by the leaders of the Third Reich. There are some subjects about which two points of view are not equally valid. We are entering, in politics especially, a post-factual era in which it is apparently permissible for public figures to assert things without evidence, and then to justify their assertions by adding “Well, that’s my opinion” – as though that in itself was some kind of justification. It isn’t. And such charlatans need to learn it isn’t. Contemplating the Lipstadt/Irving trial may help them to that end."
