The past half year has been quite a period of changes and reflection for me. One inescapable seems to be that rolling over and wrapping myself up in my own lucky circumstances and writing off the rest of the world simply isn't an option. I am and will continue to be an engaged member of our global community during my time, it is there and I can't hide from it. Hope is a survival strategy in hopeless times.

So now despite the feeling I'm little more than the sound of one hand clapping, I think I'm going to try and step it up - even try to go for some source funding so that I can finally focus full time on writing rather than this scattered interruption infested effort I live. I'm what I say I am and two, three thousand a month would buy me that freedom. Often it seems an impossible dream, other times I realize it doesn't matter, gotta try, take it one day at a time. What's the worst that can happen? More silence? Or perhaps the time to finally be able to really focus and perhaps really accomplish something I can be proud of.

Critique (and/or donations) welcome:

Peter Miesler
aka citizenschallenge
PO Box 56
Durango, Colorado 81302
( citizenschallenge at gmail )
_____________________________________________________________________________

That little outburst was inspired by a short comment I just posted at
http://whatsupwiththatwatts.blogspot.com/2017/08/diary-081117-cfi-contrarians-mo.html

Diary 8/11/2017 - Center for Inquiry Forum, Cracking the Contrarians' Code.
It starts:

"... lately mostly confined to commenting over at the Center for Inquiry forum. Recently conversations have gotten a bit livelier and occasionally even constructive since a few more people are getting involved.

Check it out sometime. Faith based vs Fact based. Climate skeptical challenges add some spice, civility and feigned civility, facts and fiction, devious rhetoric and touche's, sometimes genuine learning, insults and ruffled feathers, usually for effect, occasionally heart felt, sturm und drang and all that fun stuff.

Still, at the end of the day we’re left with the same challenge that started long ago with the first strategic attacks on the scientific understanding of tobacco smoke dangers - though at the time no one realized it, too many still don’t. ( For those details see: http://www.merchantsofdoubt.org. It's all been documented, though contrarians prefer to dismiss the book as meaningless ad hominem attacks {on their right to lie I presume}, all the while ignoring all evidence presented.)

The challenge is: How to engage in a constructive intellectual dialogue with characters who are dedicated to disparaging and dismissing serious science with what ever words and tactics are required at the moment, merely because it’s what their jobs depend on?

Good faith learning holds no interest. Sowing doubt and confusion is the goal and it’s such an easy thing to achieve if one possesses no scruples and limitless chutzpah.

It finishes with

...

I had this titled "Why not treat Republican's as the intellectual infantiles they are?" but figured I'd better ease into this.

When I think of the unbelievable nonsense Republicans can embrace:
from believing limitless growth can and should continue,
to believing that dropping more bombs will solve the problems dropping bombs created in the first place,
to pretend our actions don't impact Earth's biosphere and life support system,
to hold our biosphere in contempt and view it as a commodity only good for the plundering,
to thinking Earth observations can be blatantly ignored, if they stand in the way of profits,
to remain blind to the destruction two hundred years of avarice has inflicted on this Earth, its biosphere, its varied life forms,
to insisting that faith trumps objective verifiable facts,
to mistake their over-bloated egos for God.

So why shouldn't we confront them on those terms?
I'm not just talking to piss people off, I'm talking about forcing them to question some of their base assumptions.

Like trying to deal with malicious little punks and speaking to them accordingly. Challenge them with something they can respect.
Lordie know (the collective) we've failed up to now.
...........................................................................................

For me it's been a hell of a few months, still can't wrap my head around Democrats repeated failures, and failure to win the minds or hearts of people. No one ever seemed to take any of it seriously enough - at least no one on any level or scale to make a difference. Ever since Reagan and the Jesus Freaks, nothing but backsliding. Everyone was too busy with consumerism or dreaming of it to care. I look back on ten years of writing and got tons of stuff that could fall under told-you-so's. But I know what I've done has never amounted to more than basket weaving. Keep waiting for 'that' email, nothing. Wouldn't feel so bad, if not that so much I read out there never adds a thing. Buy 'em books and buy 'em books and all they do is eat the covers. I go from rallying, back down to ultimate despair and sense of failure and worse the utter hopelessness, why give a fuk, no one else seems to, at least not at the level I do. Not to mention life's nonstop interruptions reminding me I'm just supposed to be a wage slave, busy with busy, who am I kidding trying to write and force some of these issues/thoughts into the mix. But, then I hit bottom, well fuk, how long ya going lay on the floor.
It seems I can't do it, like the punch drunk kid who keeps getting back up. This is important and it matters and it's so tragically simple. Excuse me, it's 2:30 am and I felt like rambling. Sou, thanks for providing this space, it would be nice if over the next year it attracted some energized folks.

Those of you familiar with me know that I've produced a number of "Virtual Debates" in that I take things people have said (lecturers) or written stuff and dissect it to the best of my abilities. Been doing it a while 2010 and the Lord being my first.
AN UNAUTHORIZED SORTING OF LORD CHRIS MONCKTON’S (9/14/2009) POWER POINT PRESENTATION
http://citizenschallenge.blogspot.com/2010/08/unauthorized-sorting-of-lord-chris.html
It was followed by an 11+ installment reviewing Monckton's Minnesota Free Market Institute presentation, Autumn 2010. Having minimal grammar/writing schooling, it's a bit rough no doubt. I like to think I've been improving with time, but who knows. In any event, I've got me another Debate Series going, not a virtual one either. It started with a bright college kid commenting on a recent post where I was tearing into Republicans. It was fairly well written and smooth, so I produced a couple stand alone posts built on critiqing a couple of his comments. I left my usual invitation for him to write a thoughtful guest post responding to my critique, and damned if I didn't receive an email, 22 point monster, nearly 4000 words, though a bunch of that was quoting me. Well written and polite. His point simply reinforced the misguided notions I'd already jumped on. In other words, he provided me an excellent vehicle for trying to enunciate my specific complains and observations.

Poor guy used his real name in his first comments without realizing who's arena he was stepping into. In his email he voiced a concern about his original comments with his name - he's a student he don't need no hassles, just trying to get his degree. (I did not use his name in my posts). I tried eliminating his original comments as per his request. Unfortunately, his comments got deleted, but the name and time of original posting remains. Our exchange helped build a little mutual trust and humanity between. He's a college student and back to his studies and a bit surprised at what he walked into and won't be continuing the dialogue, which is fine. I'm still working through his "punch list" and I'm sure we'll continue a little bit of off the wire correspondence. It's nice to meet someone who can take critique like a balanced adult.

I bring all this up because I like to think this series is more explanatory and less hostile that say my Jim Steele Debates where I'm dealing with a malicious transparent destructive fraud. Here I believe I'm dealing with late 20s smart guy who's only been exposed to one side of the story. It feels nicer, like we're actually trying to have an intellectual exchange, rather than a mud fight. At least that's how I'd like to imagine it. If anyone is interested. If anyone wanted to offer any sort of feedback, it would be welcome.

That discussion over there at Dilbert's blog got under my skin and I figured it was time to repost my list of CO2 dependent modern marvels. For the list itself you'll have to link to the blog post.

A List of CO2 Science Dependent Modern Marvels proving climate scientists know what they are talking about.

Recently I got sucked back into my real passion, defending serious climate science against the cynical malicious lie dependent attacks it's been under for decades. It was an odd exposition by Dilbert's Scott Adams aptly titled, "The Non-Expert Problem and Climate Change Science." Although rather than discussing the silliness of under-informed non-experts thinking they are smarter than real experts, Adams launches into a truly delusional attack on the validity of serious scientists and their work. It wasn't a great surprise to find that Adams seems to be a Trump supporter, thus it explains his easy disconnect from objective evidence and facts when they doesn't suit his paranoid outlook.

Besides writing my own review, "Profiles in Self-delusion - Dilbert's Scott Adams," I also participated in the discussion over there and was again amazed at how many people can in total seriousness claim that there's no valid evidence that CO2 causes our current global warming.

As one of the climate science non-experts, (although with pretty near 50 years of interest and active learning under my belt, I like to think I understand it better than your average bear), how do I know that I haven't been lied to for the past fifty years?

How do I, a man who is incapable of comprehending their formulas or the details of their climate models, be so certain that what they are telling me is true?

Well it comes down to acknowledging reality.

On two levels, for one, having listened to many, many scientists giving talks about their work, I know that they are full-spectrum skeptics. They put themselves under as sharp a microscope as they do others. It is a huge active community of intelligent competing individuals always checking and cross checking each others work. It is the best humans are capable of, sure beats basing your beliefs on Faith and then bending all facts to fit your personal beliefs.

The second level is the physical reality of being able to master one's numbers and understanding to practical purposes. I believe it is tragic how many citizens don't have the first clue that our precise CO2 science was acquired by Air Force scientists, working independently from many countries, foremost USA, Australia, Russia and others. Everyone came up with the same results - that ought to tell a skeptic something!

Of course, there is also the physical reality of what we are observing throughout our planet.

Even more telling is that fundamental understanding out of which all other Climate Science flows, has been transformed into an incredible number of modern marvels that would be utterly impossible if the scientists were bluffing it.

Here, let me show you with a reprint of something I put together a while back.

This post is an interesting sort of one way collaborative effort.
You see, over the years I've communicated with a number of scientists and grads.
Asking straight forward questions and often receiving informative replies. I try not to over do my welcome, after all these are very busy people with more important things to do.

But for this post I sent out a grand shout to a number of my correspondence pals and received more responses than I expected including some informative surprises for me.

I have taken great liberty slicing and dicing their responses. Rewriting some, leaving other quotes untouched and giving all of it some order.

I mention this because I want to be clear the following List of "CO2 science dependent" modern marvels is not my own cleverness and I want to send out a big Thank You! to my informed anonymous heroes!

Also see: February 21, 2016

There's a new HotWhopper article about the signs that CO2 emissions might finally be slowing or even no longer increasing (much).

The 2016 Global Carbon Budget paper was published this week. The report is by sixty-seven people from all around the world. It is described as the "11th annual update of emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and their partitioning among the atmosphere, land, and ocean. This data synthesis brings together measurements, statistical information, and analyses of model results in order to provide an assessment of the global carbon budget and their uncertainties for years 1959 to 2015, with a projection for year 2016".

What the authors found was that carbon emissions dropped slightly in 2015, and are likely to increase only slightly this year. Over the last three years there has been almost no growth in emissions, which might be a sign that the world will soon see a decline in emissions - or not (if Donald Trump has his way).

Read the full article here - which has some critique of the WUWT comments from deniers and conspiracy theorists.

It's still by far the hottest 12 months on record (October 15 to September 16), and not just because of the El Nino.

From the blog article:

According to GISS NASA, the average global surface temperature anomaly for September was 0.91 °C, which is just 0.01 °C higher than the previous hottest September in 2014.
The average for the eight months to the end of September is 1.03 °C, which is 0.23 °C higher than the previous hottest January to September period in 2015, which with the latest data had an anomaly of 0.80 °C.

There are lots of charts.
